Time-lapse imaging of CO2 migration within near-surface sediments during a controlled sub-seabed release experiment

چکیده
The ability to detect and monitor any escape of carbon dioxide (CO2) from sub-seafloor CO2 storage reservoirs is essential for public acceptance capture (CCS) as a climate change mitigation strategy. Here, we use repeated high-resolution seismic reflection surveys acquired using chirp profiler mounted on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), image gas released into shallow sub-surface sediments above potential CCS site at 120 m water depth in the North Sea. Observations temporal changes reflectivity, attenuation, unit thickness bulk permeability sediment were used develop four-stage model evolution migration marine sediments: Proto-migration, Immature Migration, Mature Pathway Closure. Bubble flow was initially enabled through propagation stable fractures but, over time, transitioned dynamic with associated step permeability. Once injection rate exceeded which could coarser overlying point, began pool along grain size boundary. This enhanced understanding free near-surface will help improve methods detection quantification subsurface sediments.

متن کامل3D high-resolution acoustic imaging of the sub-seabed
Chirp sub-bottom profilers are marine acoustic devices that use a known and repeatable frequency-modulated source signature to produce vertical seismic reflection cross-sections of the subseabed. Here a 3D Chirp system is described that operates in the frequency range of 1.5–13 kHz, to produce a three-dimensional image of the sub-seabed, with typical penetration of 10–30 m and decimetric horizo...
متن کاملA multiscale approach to mapping seabed sediments
Benthic habitat maps, including maps of seabed sediments, have become critical spatial-decision support tools for marine ecological management and conservation. Despite the increasing recognition that environmental variables should be considered at multiple spatial scales, variables used in habitat mapping are often implemented at a single scale. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ...
متن کاملseismic imaging of complex structures by integrating pre-stack time migration and surface stacking methods
the conventional approach to seismic data analysis consists of two main steps: estimating seismic velocities, (the subsurface macro-model), and seismic imaging, (mapping of the reflected seismic energy to the reflector positions). the aim and the major challenge in the seismic data analysis is the construction of the best undistorted image. this challenge would be more problematic when geometri...
